Retinitis Pigmentosa in India is now diagnosed at many Eye Hospitals,in contrast to the past, when hospitals were not fully equipped to test this ailment.
Retinitis pigmentosa is a genes linked degenerative disease of Retina in the eyes.
Retina is situated in the posterior part of the eye.
It is the most vital part of the eyes ,all parts of the eye cornea ,lense or sclera are there just to support so that Retina can function.
If eyes are cameras, the retina is the reel of the camera where images are formed, transmitted to the brain so we “see.”
As earlier said, retinitis Pigmentosa is a disease of retina in which light-sensitive cells degenerate slowly.
So, retina of patients suffering from retinitis pigmentosa simply can not function normally.
SYMPTOMS OF RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA
Since genes that are responsible for normal structure and functions of the retina have some fault so they act in a way that cells in the retina slowly start degenerating .Although patients harboring such genes normally appear in the first few years of life, usually
But such patients having genes of retinitis pigmentosa start feeling some problems in vision.
These are..
1 Difficulty in low light areas.
2 Loss of peripheral vision of varying degrees depending on degeneration.
3 If the central part of the retina or macula is also involved, the patient with retinitis pigmentosa will suffer from difficulty in reading or near vision.
4 Difficulty in normal color perception.
It appears that patients suffering from retinitis pigmentosa all the normal functions of eyes are impaired.
Progress of disease..
Some patients usually carry some vision throughout life,while others become legally blind and very few become totally blind slowly as time passes.
DIAGNOSIS OF RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA
Besides symptoms, which are classical of this disease, there are other tests, which are diagnostics of retinitis pigmentosa..
1 Routine Eye Examination by an ophthalmologist or retina specialist.
2 FUNDUS PHOTO PLANE BOTH EYES
3 OCT
4 ERG TEST
These tests are diagnostics of retinitis pigmentosa.
TREATMENT OF RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA
So far, there was no treatment of retinitis pigmentosa in the Modern Medicine. Recently, gene therapy has been introduced,but there are two shortcomings
First, it is effective only against one gene out of nearly 100 genes.
Secondly, it is too costly,Eight lacs USD means more than eight crores INR.
