Retinitis pigmentosa is group of inherited retinal disorders which involves progressive degeneration of retina which leads to loss of vision.
Usually disease starts in second decades of life and progression depends on various factors as type of gene involved, life style ,nutrition and few other factors.
Mostly Retinitis Pigmentosa is due to autosomal recessive types of genes.
Autosomal dominant RP can also occur, the ailment may occur in male or female only in a particular family when a single copy of gene is defective.
Patient may experience loss of varying degree as loss of night vision, peripheral vision, central vision color vision or feel unbearable glare in sunlight.
Out of these symptoms’ patient may feel all or few such symptoms.
One of the marvelous structures in our body is retina which can be compared as reel in the camera where images are formed, but this reel is living one and so sensitive that normal retina can be stimulated by four photons only!
So far even after complex surgeries where a team of retina surgeons were involved for hours but successful working retina could not be transplanted.
Even gene therapy involving one type of gene promising only 10% improvement costs about eight lacs USD.
Usually patient is advised to accept the condition and wait of new treatment is discovered including work on retinal implants etc.
